It is your first weekend as the medical resident on call, covering the intensive care unit and all acute medical admissions. It is Saturday night, 10 pm, and you are having dinner with your colleagues in the staff lounge. Your discussion on the latest treatment of meningitis is interrupted by the emergency physician who asks you to see Mrs. M, a patient in the emergency department.
