Regulation of cytokine production
- cytokines are not stored in intracellular compartments
- regulation occurs at the level of gene transcription with new expression of cytokine mRNA
- specific ‘transcription factors’ are activated by an inflammatory stimulus
- transcribed cytokine genes are translated into protein and released by the cell
- many transcription factors that are important in this process
- NF-k B plays a central role in the whole cascade, and appears especially important in the regulation of TNF-a, IL-1b, IL-6 and IL-8.
