ARDS: pathophysiology

• Cytokines found in BALs of ARDS patients include:
  IL-1, IL-6, IL-8, GRO a, neutorphil-activating peptide-2, interferon-a, leukemia inhibitory factor, transforming growth factor-b, TNF-a
  

• persistent high levels of TNF-a, IL-1, IL-6 and IL-8 predict worse outcomes in ARDS pts.
