There is a recent trend to use higher levels of PEEP as a result of studies suggesting the ideal PEEP should be between the lower and the upper inflection point on the pressure-volume curve. However, increasing PEEP beyond the upper inflection point puts the patient at significant risk for alveolar overdistension and can contribute to ventilator-induced lung injury.
